What Is Blue Ray? - Read On Before Deciding To Upgrade

A lot of people are currently very confused as to which format to go for, HD-DVD or Blue Ray, as the current format war continues. Generally members of the public do not know what strengths, weaknesses and unique selling points there are for each. To understand what blue ray is and be better informed as to your choice you need to know what technology actually makes it work, the film studios that are endorsing the format and some over points which we will cover later on. An upgrade could be an expensive wrong move if you do not go into it with your eyes open.

Blue Laser or Red Laser? - That Is The Question

If somebody stopped you in the street and asked “What is Blue ray?” would you be able to answer them? Probably not. The answer to the question actually lies within the question. Generally it is not possible to define a difference between a Blue ray disc and a DVD disc as the look the same, are the same size and shape.Blue ray is called Blue ray because of the fact that it uses a blue (violet) laser to read and record data of all kinds including the likes of video and audio. Smaller and finer technological processes are used which pushes up the initial costs associated with Blue Ray compared to DVD\’s. We will however see the costs come down quite rapidly over the years to come as the process becomes more common and the technology easier to produce.

Comparison Example Of What Blue Ray Is

Compare it to a standard DVD as you would compare a calculator to a pc. Both of these can perform all sorts of mathematical equations and much but the pc can perform many times faster than a calculator can as it is infinitely more powerful. Using that example with Blue ray, a DVD and a Blue ray disc can perform the same type of operation but Blue ray is capable of outperforming a DVD, doing a much better job in playing better audio and video.

What Movies Can You Watch

Whilst educating yourself on exactly what Blue ray is, it should be borne in mind what films you will be able to purchase in your chosen format. Some of the popular films you can buy are only available on HD-DVD, whilst alot of the others can be obtained on Blue ray. As at January 2008, if you use a Blue ray player you won\’t be able to watch the 2007 box office hit Transformers. On the other hand the latest Bond sensation, Casino Royale, will only be available on Blue ray (that said, all of the movies are still released on standard DVD, these comparisons are for next generation video format). You can of course obtain a hybrid player which will obviously play both Blue Ray and HD-DVD but film releases are tending to favor one format or the other.

In conclusion you should at least now have a better understanding of what Blue ray is to enable you to make a more informed decision when you ultimately decide which format to upgrade to.

The 12F675 - A PIC Microcontroller Project Guide

The 12F675 is one of the smallest PIC Microcontrollers - it’s a tiny device with 8 pins but it’s packed with peripherals and it even has a built in 10bit ADC which can read analogue inputs from 4 pins.

It has the following internal peripherals:

1. Two timers.
2. An analogue comparator.
3. 10 bit ADC.

It also has an internal oscillator and internal reset circuit. This means the device uses minimal external components to make it work (other devices require an external crystal oscillator). Of course it also has the usual internal programming memory, EEPROM and RAM needed for programming.

Ideas for projects:

1. 4 channel volt meter.
2. Multi channel Servo controller.
3. Temperature controller.
4. Inductance meter.
5. Touch lamp.
6. Courtesy light time delay.

Note: To get data out of the device you can implement a serial RS232 transmit interface to your PC.

Why use it?
One reason is that because of its size its easy to put into restricted spaces e.g. for a model aircraft or model trains and it’s cheaper than the larger devices.

Note: The 12F629 is the same device without the ADC - so it’s even more cost effective.

So it’s useful in designs that you would not normally think of using a microcontroller for instance you could make a touch lamp dimmer - Note using the microcontroller means you can make far better functionality than using discrete hardware (and even change its programming later on).

With a lamp dimmer you could have an auto off delay function e.g. if no activity for an hour then turn off.

State machines
You could also implement a state machine for more complex control of the functionality e.g. pressing once moves to the next dimming level in the current direction while press and hold changes the dimming direction.

Using a state machine while not trivial lets you control complex operation which you could not achieve (without a great deal of effort) using discrete hardware - and the advantage of using the microcontroller is that if you get it wrong you just re code your software and test it again.

Note: The 12F675 and 12F629 use Flash programming memory i.e. they are re-programmable - you can change their functionality instantaneously with NO re-wiring.

The only problems are:

1. You need to program the device.
2. You need a programming language.

Programming the Device
Surprisingly you can program the device using the standard 4 pin PIC serial interface - ICSP (In Circuit Serial Programming) and with careful design you can even connect your programmer to the same pins that your circuit uses.

Programming language
The programming language normally recommended is assembler and there are good reasons for using assembler - e.g. very fast code and smaller final code size but I would recommend using a high level language such as Basic or C

This is because for assembler you need to work at such a low level that you spend a lot of effort to do trivial tasks and this is better left to the high level language.

For the example mentioned setting up and maintaining a state machine would be extremely difficult in assembler but much easier in C.

Make Your Computer Faster - 3 Causes and Remedies That WILL Work

Here are 3 simple tips that will make your computer faster more than 80% of the time. As long as you are using the Windows operating system, these tips will hardly ever fail.

Most of the problems associated with a slow system on the Windows platform stem from 3 simple causes.

1. Low/Overused Hardware Specifications

The first one is the most obvious of the 3. The following can cause you to experience slowness/freezing up of your computer system:

a. Having a very slow processor (below 300MHz or thereabouts).
b. Having a very small size of system (RAM) memory (64 MB should be as low as you should go).
c. Having a nearly filled up hard disk (from 70% upwards).

You can check your values right now by clicking on Start > Run, then typing “dxdiag” into the text box that comes up, then, click OK. You can get your processor and RAM (system) memory size and much more here. To get your current hard disk usage, go to My Computer, right click on ” Local Disk (C:)” and select “Properties” from the options that come up.

If your computer specifications are not within the ranges above, then your problem is not from this.

2. Computer Malware, Viruses etc.

You should always ensure that the anti-virus program in your computer is constantly updated and functional. Malware can cause dangerous and harmful changes to your system. However having a good anti-virus software helps put a stop to them.

If you have one, it’s functional and has been updated recently, you are covered - your problem is not from this either.

3. System Registry Problems

This third factor is probably the cause of your challenge. Issues arising from problems with the Windows registry account for the major part of freezing, slowness, etc in Windows-based systems, especially those online. Dealing with them can really make your computer faster, speed up your work, and decrease your frustration.

The registry is a part of memory Windows creates to monitor the whole system and store all the software/hardware changes made to it. Over a period of normal usage, it easily gets clogged up and full of errors, which are mostly redundant entries. Life online especially, causes problems in the Windows registry.

When the registry gets problem entries, it would make you experience different types of problems in your pc or laptop, as a problem in the registry slows down and creates hiccups in all parts of the system, because it essentially monitors and controls everything else.

However, with the availability of very good registry cleaners these days, slowness and freezing up of computers and laptops has a very easy solution.

A good registry cleaner deletes all those entries causing these problems from your system, bringing it back to the condition it was when you just bought it, giving you your computer back fresh and ready to go!

If you have a good updated and functional anti-virus in your system, and there was a time when your pc was fast, then the problem in your pc is almost certainly being caused by a faulty registry.

Care has to be taken, however when getting a registry cleaner for your computer, as a second rate one can end up deleting important entries; causing much more problems than it solves. Getting a recommendation on what is a certified quality problem solver is your best bet.

The Beginning of the PDA Explosion

Here is a little history on PDA’s that I think you will find interesting, at least I did, so I thought I would share it with you anyway.

In 1996, Palm computing manufactured the first generation personal digital assistant known as the Palm m130Pilot. Due to a trademark infringement lawsuit filed by Pilot Pen Corporation the name Palm Pilot was given to the second generation of PDA’s in 1997 and from 1998 onwards, this virtually became the generic name of all handhelds. Interesting huh!

Now, the founders of Palm Computing, Jeff Hawkins, Donna Dubinsky and Ed Colligan who also are the original inventors of the pilot actually when they first set out wanted to produce handwriting software named Graffiti. Fortunately, for the world they changed their plans midway, and decided to get into hardware. Palm is known to have gained from the attempts of Apple Computer and Go Corporation to produce handheld devices.

I bet you didn’t know that Palm Computing was initially a division of US Robotics and then later of 3Com. Now Jeff, Donna and Ed who initially founded Palm felt that the didn’t have enough control over the Palm Product so as a result they left 3Com and founded Handspring in 1998.

Handspring became the first Palm OS licensee and then produced a replica of the Palm handhelds and called it the Handspring Visor which used slightly different software and had a hardware expansion slot.

Then in 2000 Palm Computing became a separate company, which was called Palm Incorporated. Then in 2003, Palm Incorporated split into PalmOne for selling hardware and PalmSource for selling software. Handspring merged with Palm to form PalmOne and in 2005 PalmOne acquired the full rights to the Palm name, which it had shared with PalmSource and changed its name back to Palm.

The earlier Palms used the popular DragonBall processors which were a Motorola 68000 derivative. But the more recent models use a type of ARM architecture. The Arm Architecture is a class of RISC microprocessors, which is widely used in embedded systems and mobile devices. It is usually referred to by the Intel Xscale brand name.

Handhelds from Palm are becoming more advanced and are merging with smart phones and they have the capacity to work as computer harddrives via USB cables. The Palm handheld Treo 650 which functions as a mobile phone and also provides SMS, email and instant messaging.

It was predicted that as handhelds with multiple functions like the Treo become cheaper and more advanced, the traditional PDA device will disappear. Cell phone manufacturers are already producing smart phones, which use interfaces similar to the Palm OS and at present the Palm OS is used by the Sony Clie’, TRG Pro and Handspring Visor, apart from the Palm handheld. Now wasn’t that an interesting history on something you most likely use everyday.

Windows XP Tweaks to Speed Up a Slow Computer

Now that Vista has arrived with more of a thud than thunder, people are asking the question, “What can I do to speed up my slow computer?” A good answer is to customize your existing operating system for speed an performance. So, why not keep XP. It is Microsoft most stable operating system. Vista will not be stable until the first major service pack update is released. Until then, Vista is about as stable as a house of cards in a tornado. Also XP to Vista migration causes slow computer performance. If you are one of these people who rather kick XP up a notch than pay for a system that meets Vista outrageous specs for optimum performance, read on for some expert tips to speed up a slow computer using XP tweaks.

Windows XP’s stability makes it the most “tweakable”. There are more than a few areas that are specifically ripe with opportunities to improve slow computer performance and remedy a slow computer. Let’s start with getting your hard drive running smoothly.

XP Tweaks for Slow Computer Tip #1—Turn Off Windows Indexing Service

If you have ever wondered why your hard drive makes so much noise when idle, this is due to your files being indexed in order to help your CPU find these files easier. However, even the most insignificant files are indexed. This service puts a huge strain on your hard drive which ironically makes things easier for Windows. Because of this conundrum, most techs have deemed this Indexing Service insignificant and the cause of slow computer hard drive access. You can turn off service with the following steps.

1. Double-click My Computer, point to Explorer Bar on the View menu, and click Search.
2. Click Change preferences, and then click Without Indexing Service.
3. Click No, do not enable Indexing Service, and then click OK.

XP Tweaks for Slow Computer Tip #2— Speed Up Your Hard with NTFS.

Windows XP offers NTFS hard drive configuration. This offers better compression, security and encryption. However, this conversion from FAT to NTFS standard requires a bit more space on your hard drive nevertheless you will be reward with a faster drive. You can easily switch to this system by following directions below:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type cmd press Enter.
4. At the command prompt
Type convert X:/FS:NTFS(X is your hard drive letter)
5. Hit Enter

XP Tweaks for Slow Computer Tip #3—Disable Unnecessary Startups

Now let’s tweak Windows to run faster. A slow computer can be attributed to how well your monitor and manage your programs and processes. Windows XP gives you complete control over what programs and processes are loaded into your configuration. There are only six vital programs needed to run your computer. However, there are probably dozens running as soon as you startup your PC. No wonder you have a slow computer. You can manage your startup configuration by following these instructions.

1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type: msconfig.exe
4. In the “system configuration utility”,
click either “service” or “startup” tab
5. Uncheck all programs that you don’t want to use.
6. Click OK

XP Tweak for Slow Computer Tip #4—Increase Virtual Memory

Your computer uses physical memory, RAM, and virtual memory. Virtual memory is used to simulate more RAM when your computer is reaching its maximum CPU and RAM usage. It is very similar to a bucket filling up with water, in this analogy your RAM is the bucket and water being computer processes and programs. However, your bucket size is limited by your amount of RAM. The more programs and processes you use cause the bucket to become full. However, you can use a spare bucket to quickly help meet the demand; Virtual memory is that spare bucket.

You can change your virtual memory by altering amount of resources for reserved for it, in a sense making the spare bucket bigger. Virtual memory uses free space as a resource. So you can change the amount free space reserved for the Virtual memory Check out the “How to clean up a slow computer” for efficient ways to clean up your drive.

Increasing your Virtual Memory is easy. There are some important facts to remember. When you get to the Virtual Memory menu select the Custom Size check box, then choose the initial size and the max size. Depending on how much free space you have you can choose what amount of free space you want reserved for the paging file. Its better to keep the initial and maximum size the same to cut down on your CPU access. This will stop your CPU from constantly changing your Virtual memory paging file size. Also set the size at least 1.5 times higher than your physical memory. If you are still confused this link below for a visual step by step instructions.

1.Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2.Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
3.On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
4.Under Virtual memory, click Change.
5.Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change. In most computers its C:
6.Under Paging file size for selected drive, click to Custom size check box. You can enter the amount of memory you would like to reserve for Virtual memory by entering the initial and maximum size.
7.Click Set

In addition to these tweaks. You can take it one step further in you quest to make your slow computer a distant memory. This requires you to perform some registry editing. I suggest you clean your registry before attempt any editing. After your registry is clean, you can perform several tweaks to speed up your slow computer. The site below provides more tips and tutorials to increase PC performance.

Ipod Or Mp3 - Which Would You Choose

Before the iPod came out there were portable MP3 players, though they were simple devices - they simply played music, nothing else. MP3 players started to evolve, then Apple/Mac came out with iPod and its popular white headphones would soon be seen from nearly an iNfinite number of people walking down the streets as if they had these wired brain implants stringing from their ears.

Then space expanded - though battery life of any of those devices isn’t nearly long enough to amount to the hours upon hours of music that can be stored onto one device - and, well, the MP3 wars continued… mostly between the infamous Win and Mac corps.

In one aspect: which does your brother prefer? A computer running a Windows operating system or a computer running a Macintosh operating system? In another aspect: which does your brother prefer? An MP3-playback device that looks and functions much like its competitor (except has a different nametag) or an MP3-playback device that looks and functions much like its competitor except has a different nametag?

I’ll tell you that I, honestly, prefer Windows OS computers over Macintosh OS because Windows is far more versatile. However, there are still features in Macs that are unique. You asked a great question. So many people have very dark opinions on the subject - it’s all black and white to them, it’s either only one player or the other.

You could prefer driving a car with stick-shift and might lean towards a Windows OS. You could prefer driving a car that’s automatic and might lean towards a Macintosh OS. There really is a psychology to it all… to a certain point. You would just have to see which one of the two that your brother would like to have. You can always go the the mall and talk to a sales agent about the pros and cons to having or getting one or the other.

I told you that I prefer Windows computers. However, I might one day buy an iPod. Why? Not because it is made by Mac but because it has practically monopolized the portable audio and video, player device industry - just as Windows has conquered and monopolized the general computing industry over Macintosh. Okay, so surely Microsoft has the competitor to the iPod, right? Right. It, at present, is not as mainstream as the iPod so it is not as flexible to immediate expansions to the device.

However, again, in the future it is very likely that Microsoft will pull a proverbial osculating orange out of their hat and make that Apple look tiny in comparison. Apples and oranges? Basically: Microsoft/Windows will likely overcome the current ever-so-popular Apple/Macintosh “iPod” but in the mean time, iPod is champion.

Drawing conclusion - might your brother prefer the champion of today or the champion of tomorrow? And consider how fast those devices are outdated.

I honestly don’t know what he’ll be better off with. “Today’s champion”, iPod, has many versatilities - you can even buy docking bays for them creating entertainment centers with the iPod serving as a type of central processing unit. “Tomorrow’s champion”, anything by Microsoft, what’s currently out is “Windows Media Player” based hardware, will have just as many features.

The war between Microsoft and Apple, or between one single dominating computer industry and the leading opponent, will never end. The best - or perhaps scariest - that will come of anything between those two corporations is either a merger or one of them folding. Likely? Doubt it. Anyway, maybe you can be sneaky in finding out what he prefers. Both kinds of devices are excellent choices. It’s really just a matter of personal opinion.

Windows XP will be oldschool this time next year, with Windows Vista taking its place. Early 2007 will be a time of intense change in the industry - including MP3s, iPods, etc. The iPod is probably the best bet for now but in 2007 it will be the new word for “outdated”.

I hope that whichever your brother ends up with he’s happy with! I’m sure he will be in either case! But like I said it is totally up to him and what kind of things he is into. If he likes the ipod then he should go with an ipod and the same gose with the mp3 player. But just remember that just because the ipod will know next year as “outdated” dose not mean that it won’t last long. Sometimes “outdated” things are always the best things to get.

Singer Bono Private Equity Firm Saves Palm

The company made famous with Palm Pilot has seen better days. Elevation Partners, Bono’s private equity company is putting $325 million cash infusion into the company just prior to them release of their latest mobile computing model device? But with Apple iPone coming out at the end of the month (June 2007) and AT&T announcing its new HBO capable video phone, one has to wonder if it will work.

Why is Bono doing this? Well one speculation is that Bono wants to have armies of people able to mobilize fast in SmartMobs. One person we interviewed said; “Bono wants to be able to disrupt events like the G-8 Summits and World Bank meetings.” If Palm has devices for mobile computing and works with companies like Google then they will have incredible mobs able to create anarchy whenever they want?

Is Singer Bono saving Palm or is he gathering more troops to disrupt our society and civilization and turn the World into a Socialist Community using mobile computing as his tool? Of course the story is that Elevation Partners is pumping in money in order to take advantage of the Foleo Sales and out do Apple iPhone and beat AT&T or Verizon to the punch? Will it work?

That is a lot of cash; $325 million. Will it be enough to over take the market and will the other companies come up to the plate. This may cause other companies to back-off as if the competition is too great there will be less money for any one company, making the ROI unlikely. Any advertiser worth their salt will indeed go get some of this money as they blow thru it.

It does appear that there is a bit of high-roller bluffing and intimidation going on here and most people realize that Bono is a lot of talk, even if the words flow together like wine and song.
