The “Convenience Factor”

Are your CSI marks declining and you are not sure where to look? One area you might want to check is your “Convenience Factor.”

By that, I mean, has your organization become concerned with what is convenient for your Customer or convenient for your organization?

Have you heard this lately from your representatives?

“No, that was our old policy. We are doing it this way now….”

“I can’t get to that today, how about next week?”

“We’re too busy today. I can schedule you in for an appt. on Thursday the 20th.”

“No, we stopped doing that.”

“You’ll have to bring it back in next week.”

“I can’t check on it right now. I’ll get back to you in a day or so.”

“We are very busy right now. Can I call you back later?”

“It’ll be awhile until I can get to you.”

Do you see what I mean? All of these are at the heart of the loss of Convenience by your Customers, and lead to a drop in CSI.

Of course, there may be mitigating circumstances.

Are you a one man show, or do you have a whole department? Maybe you are extremely busy and cannot answer the question or get to the request right then. I, and every Customer on the planet can understand that sometimes, we have to wait.

But when you are diagnosing a decline in CSI you need to look at your “Convenience Factor.”

You might find that someone in the organization has taken it upon themselves to rewrite company policy or procedures. This is normally done in response to something that takes a little more time or is more difficult to complete. So instead of searching for ways to become more efficient, people start looking for “shortcuts” to make it easier to do their job, and that may not be in line with what is right for the Customer or the company. And almost always it will not meet the “Spirit of the Position.”

Maybe there has been a rash that has developed. This rash is called “Notme” rash. It spreads from one rep to another when there has been a decline in management involvement or one of the reps has decided to take it upon themselves not to follow company policy or procedure, or even worse, become “Maliciously Obedient.” Sometimes “Notme” rash develops as a result of a personal request that has been turned down or a raise that has been delayed. Sound familiar?

It can be corrected with a dose of “Management Salve” which includes diagnosing and counseling. Sometimes the rash has become so severe the rep does not make it through the procedure. Most times though, they make it through the session and with a change in attitude, they become engaged in making Customers happy again.

Other times it is simply a result of a procedure change or policy change that has started to produce unexpected results. Like maybe you had to make a scheduling change, and suddenly there is a gap in coverage. Or you changed your policy regarding returns and the person working the returns has not been trained or did not receive the new policy.

The key here is to make sure that you are still convenient for your Customers and not for your organization.

Any time you make a Customer jump through a hoop that is designed to illustrate to the Customer that they are “just a Customer” you will start to lose business.

However, if your organization shows your Customer that they are not “just a Customer,” but a Friend, and that Friends take care of each other, then you can expect to see excellent CSI results.

And that is where the “Convenience Factor” will show up in your results.

Can You Guess Frisco Texas’s Population?

Can you guess the population of Frisco as of May 1st?

Every time I see Frisco’s growth in numbers all I can say is WOW!

This time I’m really saying WOW because I’m so used to telling you what big leaps and bounds our city has grown by.

For the first time I’m telling you our population has shrunk. Yes, shrunk! When I saw May’s population numbers I was sure it was a mistake and I waited to write this post until I got a second report to confirm.

So here it is, confirmed by NCTCOG, last month Frisco lost an estimated 757 residents.

It is still estimated that we will go over the 100,000 mark later this year. In fact, according to the Texas State Water Board, Frisco’s population will continue to rise steadily for at least the next fifty years.

This brief slowdown in Frisco’s population slowdown is not a surprise to Frisco Planners and they say it is regional and country wide in scope. Here are some of the numbers to put it in perspective:

Frisco building permits by year

2003: 2705

2004: 3415

2005: 3677

2006: 3414

2007: 474 (year to date).

The Year to Date number for Frisco is down 43% compared to 2006.

To put it in perspective with nearby cities:

McKinney: down 48% (453 permits)
Little Elm: down 31% (116 permits)
Allen: down 65% (138 permits)
Plano: down 38% (116 permits)
Prosper: down 12% (79 permits)
Celina: down 40% (24 permits)
Melissa: down 58% (51 permits)
Anna: down 66% (46 permits)

Email Me if you want to be the first to know information as this community develops. I love watching our city grow!!!

If you are in the market for a Home in TX please let me share my expertise and love of this city with you.

The Amazing Flowers Of Camellia Japonica And Camellia Sasanqua

Japanese Camellia, Camellia japonica. American gardeners in the South know and love the Camellia japonica, a landscape shrub, bush, or tree that can grow 20 feet tall. The Camellia japonica became an important garden landscape plant in the World War II war years in the 1940’s when Dr. Tom Brightwell collected a large Camellia cultivar planting at the University of Georgia Experimental Station at Tifton, Georgia, that is still actively maintained as a Camellia arboretum for gardeners to tour publicly and to compare varieties, color of flower blooms, flower size, and flower density studies. Several hundred Camellia shrubs, bushes, and trees are planted and growing at the Tifton, Georgia location. Camellia japonica was the favorite flowering plant of Dr. Tom Brightwell, although he planted Camellia Sasanqua trees and bushes also in the garden. Dr. Brightwell not only planted Camellia seed, but he selected the outstanding cultivars and grafted or budded those Camellia varieties named by him onto Camellia seedling rootstock.

Several other well known Camellia gardens are located in the United States; The Burden Center at Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Bellingrath Gardens at Theodore, Alabama; The City Park at New Orleans, Louisiana; Clemson, South Carolina Botanical Gardens; Atlanta, Georgia, Botanical Garden; Harry P. Leu Gardens, Orlando, Florida; The United States National Arboretum, Washington D.C.; Thomas H. Perkins III Camellia Garden, Brookhaven, Mississippi; Huntington Camellia Garden, California; Massee Lane Camellia Garden, Fort Valley, Georgia; and the Vale Camellia Garden, Waltham, Massachusetts.

The Massee Lane Camellia garden was donated as the headquarters for the American Camellia Society organized in 1945. The Camellia japonica shrubs, bushes, and trees are planted under the shade of pine trees and flowering Southern Magnolia trees as shading that is required for the best Camellia plant growth. The 9 acre Camellia tree garden is bordered by brick walkways, where over 1000 Camellia shrubs and trees can be viewed and enjoyed by the public during the fall, winter, and spring.

Dr. Tom Brightwell of the Tifton, Georgia Camellia garden exchanged Camellia plants with the land donor of Massee Camellia gardens, Mr. David C. Strother. Dr. Brightwell also researched the Camellia and exchanged Camellia cultivars with William Hertrich of Huntington Camellia Gardens in Los Angeles, California and with numerous Camellia researchers at Massee Lane Gardens, 100 Massee Lane, Fort Valley, Georgia, the headquarters of the American Camellia Society.

The Huntington Botanical Garden in Los Angeles, California boasts a Camellia garden of 1200 different cultivars of Camellia japonica and Camellia sasanqua that covers twelve acres for public viewing of the Camellia blooms during the flowering season. The superintendent, Mr. William Hertich, of the Camellia garden planted thousands of Camellia seed to be used as a rootstock on grafting superior Camellia cultivars. These seedling rootstock resulted in the growth and selection of hundreds of new hybrid Camellia selections, many of which still grow at the garden today. William Hertich devoted many years of his life growing and photographing the Camellia trees and flowers. Mr. Hertich published his work on the Camellia plant in 3 volumes at the Huntington Camellia Gardens.

Other very large Camellia gardens outside the United States are the Peter Fisher Camellia Garden in Hamburg, Germany and the Royal Botanical Camellia Garden in Melbourne, Australia. The Higo Camellia bonsai Camellia plants from Japan can be seen at the Huntington Camellia Gardens along with aromatic, fragrant Camellia cultivars and a large collection of Camellia Sasanqua introductions from Nuccio’s Nursery of Altadena, California. A new important book by Ann Richardson, A curator’s Introduction to the Camellia Collection, can be purchased from the Huntington Library Press for $14.95 and is filled with valuable information for any lover of the Camellia flower, tree, or plants.

Growing Camellia plants into trees takes many years unless you buy a large flowering size Camellia tree that can be very expensive.. Very few perennial evergreen shrubs display the beautiful form in the landscape and the massing flowering habit of the Camellia. The Camellia japonica has the flower colors of pink, red, white, purple, and peppermint. The Camellia japonica can begin blooming as early as December and continues into March and April on some varieties, depending on weather warm-ups during the winter. Camellia shrubs and trees resent being transplanted in the landscape from one spot to another, and often die unless transplanting takes place during the winter. Even then, the Camellia does not transplant well, and can sit inert in a location showing little growth, if any, and many times will decline in size or die unless a large root-ball is dug. Camellia plants should be purchased from a nursery growing in a container, so that a full root system can be planted and grown. Never buy a Camellia plant bare root!

Camellia shrubs and trees prefer light or heavy shade for growing, and pine trees or flowering magnolia trees are the perfect companion plants for the Camellia shrub. Full sun will burn the leaves of a Camellia shrub except for interior leaves and no one wants a plant looking like that in a landscape garden. The discovery of the plant hormone, gibberellic acid, with its accelerative growth effect on individual flowers of the Camellia became an important method of winning prizes at Camellia flower shows. A normal Camellia flower, teacup size, could be treated with a drop of gibberellic acid at an inferior (lower) bud, and the teacup size flower would continue to grow to the size of a dinner plate. This treatment process has become important in treating other plant products to increase growth size of flowers, fruits, leaves, and in rooting hormone mixtures and seed germination.

A unique characteristic of both the Camellia japonica and Camellia sasanqua is the beautiful and spectacular bloom-drop circle that forms beneath the tree, surrounding the plant after older flowers fall and shatter on the ground. The glow of the fallen petals in the circle increases as the season progresses and many gardener’s view the bloom-drop circle as fanciful and beautiful as the fresh flowers remaining on the tree. The Camellia Sasanqua is often and commonly called simply, Sasanqua. The Sasanqua flower colors of red, white, pink, purple, and peppermint are the same colors, but smaller than the Camellia japonica blooms. The Camellia Sasanqua can grow 16 feet tall and blooms earlier (October to March) than Camellia japonica. The leaves are a glowing waxy green and evergreen with a slight curving habit. Single red, white, or pink flowers of Sasanqua are preferred by most buyers, but double flowering Sasanqua is stunning when in full bloom. The Sasanqua provides a perfect specimen landscape plant that will tolerate full sun, and is most often used in Zone 6-9 as a privacy hedge for screening out noisy neighbors.

Truth About Why Men And Women Really Go To Bars And Clubs

There are only two reasons that a man should go to a bar or club:

  1. Hang out with friends and drink
  2. To get laid

Considering that the first reason is only a poor excuse to cover up the second one for a majority of men, why is it that so many men end up doing so many other things besides getting laid when they go out?

Perhaps the biggest reason why is if you ask women why she goes to a bar or club she will say:

  1. To hang out with friends
  2. To go dancing

When you walk into a bar or club it is easy to believe all is well, because there they are hanging out with friend and dancing. So most men being the gentlemen and nice guys that they are do anything they can to act as if they aren’t trying to get laid. The only problem is almost every single woman who is at a bar or club already knows that you are there for one of the two reasons for men listed above.

Since you are talking to her, obviously you are looking to get laid. As a man, this can be a problem because women to go to bars and clubs for only two reasons as well:

  1. Attention
  2. To get laid

So you trying to act as if that is not what you are after, not only allows women who are looking for attention to get it without giving you anything in return.

It can also prevent you from getting laid because you hid your intentions too much from women who are looking to get laid.

Benefits of Lutein Explained - Foods or Supplements

The benefits of lutein to the health of the eyes are undisputed. Lutein and zeaxanthin supplements are recommended to prevent cataracts, age related macular degeneration and to counteract the effects of the sun and oxidative stress on the interior of the eyes, as well as a treatment for people who have been diagnosed with macular degeneration.

The recommended zeaxanthin and lutein dosage varies, depending on a person’s age, overall health and current condition of the eye.

While no USRDA or recommended daily intake has been established, because of the known benefits of lutein, government officials have done surveys to determine the average daily intake of this antioxidant. It is estimated that most Americans consume about 1 to 2 mg of lutein per day. The most common dietary sources are dark green leafy vegetables.

The best source for pure lutein and zeaxanthin supplements is the marigold flower. Some supplements contain lutein “esters”, but it is unclear if the benefits of lutein esters are the same as those of pure lutein. In order for a supplement to provide the purported health benefits, the ingredients must be “bioavailable” or available for use by the human body.

The bioavailability of an ingredient in a supplement may be determined by the form that is used. In some supplements, esters are easily absorbed by the human body. In the case of lutein and zeaxanthin supplements, it has been suggested that esters are less bioavailable, as they are insoluble in water. If this is true, then the necessary lutein dosage, in ester form, would be greater, to see positive results.

Much debate continues, but the best lutein and zeaxanthin supplements contain the pure natural form.

Research has shown that there may be many health benefits of lutein and zeaxanthin supplements. As antioxidants, they may provide protection against bladder cancer. Increased intake of lutein and zeaxanthin has been shown to be related to improved bone mass in premenopausal women, so one of the benefits of lutein and zeaxanthin supplements may be a reduced risk of osteoporosis.

Higher levels of lutein, zeaxanthin and other carotenoids have been associated with a lower risk of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is one of the most common age related diseases of the heart. It is a type of arteriosclerosis, commonly referred to as hardening of the arteries. In atherosclerosis, cholesterol deposits accumulate on the interior of the blood vessels and over time become hard plaques.

These plaques irritate the lining of the arteries leading to chronic inflammation and reducing the elasticity of the blood vessels. This condition may eventually lead to ruptures or blockages. Although the necessary zeaxanthin and lutein dosage to provide the most health benefits to the heart have not been established, researchers for the best daily supplements include 5 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin in their multi vitamin products.

It is believed that chronic inflammation quickly depletes the body’s supply of antioxidants. Several studies have suggested that lutein and zeaxanthin supplements, along with supplementation of other antioxidants may provide health benefits to people at risk for developing heart disease and cancer, two diseases in which chronic inflammation is involved.

These studies are among the reasons that the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society recommend a diet rich in a variety of multi colored fruits and vegetables. It is antioxidants that give fruits and vegetables their unique colors.

One of the final benefits of lutein and zeaxanthin supplements that we will discuss here is related to the development of Alzheimer’s disease. In recent studies, measured levels of several antioxidants including vitamin A, E, lutein, zeaxanthin and beta-carotene in the blood streams of patients suffering from mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease were much lower than levels found in controls.

Mild cognitive impairment typically leads to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Researchers concluded that increased daily intake of antioxidants could reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia in the elderly.

In conclusion, to provide the most benefit and protection from age related diseases of all types, supplementation should begin in early adulthood and should include an appropriate zeaxanthin and lutein dosage.

When combined with other vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and nutrients, lutein and zeaxanthin supplements provide many health benefits. Some suspected benefits of lutein have not been discussed in this article, as research is still on-going.

Great Gifts for Grads

Ah, graduation. Remember that soaring feeling of freedom? That excitement of stepping out into a whole new world of choices and decisions, all made by you? There’s no doubt that graduation, whether it be from high school, college, or grad school, is a wonderful milestone in life.

But what do you give to commemorate such a milestone? Something useful? Something time-honored that they’ll keep forever? Something fun to say, “Hey! Good Job!”?

It’s a personal decision, so we’ll give you both sides of the fence here, from the seriously special to the downright fun.

For a Creative Gift

Think about what you really missed when you went away to college (or what you missed when you left college and stepped out into the real world). Think about that first week in your dorm room, sleeping with a bunch of strangers. Why not put some creative thinking to work and stock up a ‘Going Away’ trunk? Fill it with snacks, a comfy blanket, a travel mug for coffee, and any other little things your grad might need at school (or, at their first day on the job).

You could also think about throwing in some fun, reusable water bottles. Those are always handy!

For a Healthy Gift

Give him or her ways to combat the ‘Freshman 15′ (you know, the fabled 15 pounds that every freshman puts on when they start college?) Create a portable fitness kit for him, or make her a gift basket full of healthy, organic snacks. Or, instead of throwing it all in a basket, why not put it all in a brand new backpack or laundry bag?

For Pure Decadence and Fun

Ok, so here’s where you can splurge if you’re feeling extravagant. Remember how, well, yucky those showers could be in the dorm? Why not stock her up on the nicest soaps and shampoos, all in a portable plastic basket she can carry to the bathroom. Don’t forget the flip-flops (and perhaps a luxurious bathrobe).

For the Time-Honored Gift

When is jewelry not appreciated? A diamond necklace or silver bracelet is a great way to honor your grad’s accomplishment, and it’s something he or she will keep forever.

Or, what about some books on how to navigate his way through school (or, the real world for that matter …) Again, these could be put in a new backpack or briefcase.

For a Technology Gift

Well, you’ve got about a million choices in this category! You could get her a PDA to help manage all those parties she’s going to be attending (and she might, occasionally, use it to track homework assignments!).

How about a nice pair of headphones for his iPod for when he has to walk to class (or to work)? Or you might consider a flash drive for his laptop to make it easy to transfer files.

Digital cameras also make great gifts, especially if your grad is starting college. They’ll be able to take plenty of pictures to send home to their family!

With all the great gifts available for grads, there’s no doubt that with a little creativity you can come up with something special, useful, or just fun to honor this momentous occasion.

Use the Right Tool for the Job - When to Use Online File Sharing vs Email

Would you use a saw to hammer a nail? It can be dangerous to use email to share files with others when it only leads to chaos and people using the wrong version of the file.

We all know the wisdom of ‘use the right tool for the job’ - to do otherwise is to invite confusion and lost files. It’s no different with the many choices of online Internet-based tools: pick the right one and you job will be sped along to successful conclusion.

Email is the #1 Internet application. Free mail services such as Yahoo Mail, Microsoft Hotmail and Google GMail are perennial favorites because they provide powerful mail capabilities, work from any browser or computer, and are free. Many of us still use PC-based mail programs such as Microsoft Outlook.

However, no matter what mail program you use, you are bound to have used it at times to share files with friends or colleagues. It’s so tempting because it’s so easy - just attach the file and hit ‘Send’, and the message is sent off to Samantha and Henietta. Not only that, but you can be sure they’ll notice it - it’ll be right at the top of their email inbox.

Or can you be sure? There are several potential hitches with sending files by email, and a more pervasive problem when people slip into using their email programs as a ‘filing system’ for dozens or hundreds of file attachments they’ve received.

First, the potential hitches to them even getting the file in the first place:
1. Your email system or theirs might absolutely refuse to transmit the attachment because it’s too large or because virus protection software is over zealous and stripping out attachments
2. Their email system might have spam filters that prevent them from ever seeing the email
3. Your email might get lost in their inbox - never noticed by them; only leading to you being asked to ‘send it again please’

Second, the more pervasive problem when you and your colleague Samantha and Henietta slip into using email as a filing system. The problem is that email inboxes and folders fill up with many emails with many attachments, and when you send a new version of a file, the old version of the file never goes away - it’s also still there, lurking in their email folders. It’s all too easy for them to mistakenly refer to the wrong version of the file. This can be a major source of confusion, mistakes or worse.

There’s a better way to share files with one or more groups than sending them via email attachments - post the files online into a single file sharing website, where all your colleagues have secure access to the files. That way, members always access the latest, most current version of the files.

There are a variety of excellent online file sharing solutions for groups. The best provide various levels of support for groups to set privacy levels so the files can only be accessed by group members who log in with passwords. Here are three good choices:

1. Google has a good directory at
http://www.google.com/Top/Computers/Software/Internet/Clients/File_Sharing/

2. Yahoo has a good directory at
http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Internet/Peer_to_Peer_File_Sharing/

3. KeepandShare file sharing

The third, is an easy-to-use system where you create a free account and organize your information in folders that you name whatever you like. Folders can contain files you upload, as well as native web documents you can create in KeepandShare. You set the ‘sharing’ on the files and folders to control who sees what - so your information is always as secure as you want. You can even grant edit rights to allow others in your group to upload files into a folder for sharing.

Lastly, KeepandShare also offers group calendar sharing with the same password-protection as the calendar.

Mitch Mueller writes on a variety of web topics, always trying to make it easy for folks to use the web to better their lives.

A Chimp Off The Ole’ Block!

At first glance this may seem not to be a political article about a politically hot issue, but it is!

In fact, this is one of the most far reaching case ever taken to a court. And the problem, as I see it, is that the court is European Court of Human Rights! And you know what that means! The implications to our very lives is enormous!

For one thing, this is all about Chimpanzee Civil Rights!

No, not about a person in the country of Chimpanzee; a real live, from Africa chimpanzee! (notice please there is no capitalization this time?) You see, a couple of Chimps were smuggled into Austria. Smuggled by criminals who wanted to use them as Guinea Pigs. Seriously. And not only are the Guinea Pigs upset, but so are the people of Austria!

There are some who want this chimp, and all the others like him, to become “persons”. No, that’s not right, it needs to be capitalized; to become “Persons”. Like me and you, Persons! After all, they have “personalities”, and they are after all, 98% gene pool sharing with humans, right?
And under the laws of that host country, being a person is important. That is; if you want to become independent. To live free. To eat. To pay utility bills. To copyright your pictures, drawings, and I would suppose, the “missiles” that they all chunk at tourists. Yes, being a “Person” is important.
The law caught these two chimps in a shipment coming into the country. They sentenced? them to life at a sanctuary. The sanctuary went bankrupt. (as many do eventually) Now what can we do with these “person-like” chimps? What kind and of what quality of life is to be theirs? Lord only knows. Yes. Lord only knows.

If this case wins in the highest Courts of Europe, then in fact the quality of life for you and me is in some jeopardy. It won’t be the same around here either! We can’t trade with Europe if we ignore their laws. Remember? We don’t trade with Cuba because there are “Persons of persuasion” there ruling that country. So the rest of the country cannot get medical supplies, nor toliet paper I suppose, from the United States of America.

What will this new One World Government be like with, I suppose the law would be amended for all animals eventually, I mean you have to have equality, right? What will this country will be like when you and I can be hauled before a World Court, right along with the Chimps? I wonder……
For one thing, no political leader of any country would dare ignore the Chimp vote! Any Chimp could become the next President! They would have preference over you and I when at the Social Security counter, the voting booth, the medical hospital, and the banks.
I know that because some that are not “Legal Persons” do so now, at the expense of you and I.
I am not trying to be crass here, I am not into insults. Nor am I comparing Mexican Citizens to Chimpanzees! I am only comparing the law to both newly “citizenship Persons”, who have immigrated to the United States of America. You see, I think this is foolish on a lot of levels, this “Personalizing” of Chimpanzees.

For instance, with out “open border” program, we could get a massive influx of Lama People! Sure, I ain’t kidding you here!

Our Penguin Population could result in a change at the food subsidy program. Now we would have to permit fish and blubber purchases by anyone “Personas” who has a Welfare Card.
And of course there is “Cross-breed” Love. I must find a better description for that! I mean, Chimpanzee People will want to marry whoever they will. And there may begin a movement, and there are many that are interested, to have two humans and one animal marriages! I mean, we often in the past have seen our favorite pet as part of our family, right? So what is one more “Species”? By the way, I just had a thought, are “Chimpanzee (or any other) Person” really considered a separate specie from man? Mmm, have to look into that…

But until the highest Court in the European Continent makes a decision, we have people here that can be appointed to care and nurture and handle the chimpanzees in this country. We call them, “Zoo Keepers”. I suppose we would have to start having court appointed Guardians for our chimps too? They could then own companies, and vote, and buy real estate, and I would suppose, get married to just about anyone they wanted to marry.
The only thing that I see in our Society that they can not do, is Immigrate to Mexico! But then, there are those that would smuggle, right?

What Causes Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is narrowing of any of the vertebral openings that nerves go through. The narrowing compresses the nerve, and symptoms appear due to impaired nerve function. The spine is composed of approximately 33 interlocking bones, called vertebrae. It has two major functions: structural and functional. Structurally, the spine allows us to stand upright, provides a place for muscles, tendons and other bones to attach to, and gives us the flexibility to turn, bend and twist. Functionally, the spine provides protection for the spinal cord and distribution of spinal nerves.

The spinal cord carries all the messages between our brains and our bodies. Some of the fibers carry motor (movement) instructions to the body, and some carry sensation information to the brain. A pair of spinal nerves branch off of the cord and exit the spine between each pair of vertebrae, carrying messages to and from the body in that area. Nerves from the cervical spine go to the face, neck and diaphragm. Thoracic nerves go to the arms and chest. Lumbar nerves go to the hips, legs, rectum, urethra and sexual organs.

Each vertebra has a total of five openings that nerves pass through: the spinal canal, which contains the spinal cord, two neural foramina, or openings in the bone for the nerve root, and two intervertebral spaces. Spinal stenosis occurs when any of these openings is narrowed enough to compress a nerve.

Some people are born with spinal stenosis, or a congenital narrowing of the spinal canal or other openings. Spinal stenosis can be secondary to other congenital abnormalities, such as scoliosis or achondroplasia.

Most of the time, people acquire spinal stenosis as they age; it’s rare in people younger than 50. Calcium deposits develop in the ligaments between vertebrae, we grow bone spurs, the vertebra don’t fit together like they once did and they slip out of alignment—these are normal changes that occur as we get older, but they can cause spinal stenosis. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in the discs and facet joints contribute to spinal stenosis, too.

There are a few conditions that cause spinal stenosis that are neither congenital nor the result of aging. Tumors can invade any of the spinal spaces and compress nerves. Paget’s disease is a bone disorder that causes the vertebrae to thicken, obstructing the openings. Fluorosis, or excessive exposure to fluoride, causes calcification of the ligaments around the spinal openings. The posterior longitudinal ligament, which runs down the back behind the spinal cord, may turn to bone and put pressure on nerves.

Although there are several causes of spinal stenosis, the mechanism is always the same: a narrowed opening compresses a nerve, and that causes sensory and functional symptoms.
